The New Medicare Card Transition begins in a little over a week!
On April 1, 2018, CMS will begin mailing the new Medicare cards with the Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). As soon as the patient receives the new cards, begin using the MBI on the new card, it is effective immediately. (unless the patient is new to Medicare, in which case refer to the coverage start date on the card.
How do you get the MBI?
1. From the patients new Medicare card.
2. From your Medicare Administrative Contracting Mac Portal if the patient can not provide the card. Starting in June 2018, use the look-up tool on your mac portal. If you do not have access, you will need to sign up.
3. From the Remittance Advisor “RA” from October 2018 through December 31, 2019. The MBI will be included on the “RA” if no “HICN” is submitted on the claim. Note: People with Medicare enrolled
Medicare Advantage and or Part D plans will continue to use the cards from those plans when they get health care and prescriptions.
